Clearly we've learned our strengths and our weaknesses...Blogging is definitely a weakness.
As we grow and face challenges in the world of small business owners, we know it's all about how you react. Positivity is a key component of Smokey J's. We are excited about this new challenge and accept the changes. We look forward not backward and can't wait to see what this new chapter will bring.
In case you haven't heard...We will be moving to our new location soon. It is actually the building we first WANTED but was not available at the time. Shearer Road and Gray Road. Back in the day it was Willies BBQ- another local take-out. We hope to carry on Willies legacy and add our own unique flare.
The food truck and catering will still be in full force and we hope to feed all our regulars as well as meet some new friends and families in the process.
Onward and upward...this pigs gotta fly!

Well, we did it! November 16th marked our 1 year anniversary. We've learned so much over the past year. Owning your own business is no joke! We continue to learn from our mistakes and hopefully make less of them as time goes on. The highlights from one year definitely out weigh the bloopers!
As the saying goes, "you're only as good as your worst critic"- well in that case we have alot of work to do. You have to take it all in stride.
If there is one thing we've learned - it is you can't be everything to everyone. And that is ok with us. We will continue to try and do better, be better, say things better, forgive ourselves and ask God for forgiveness. Then start again the next day.
The one year celebration was wonderful. We had almost the entire family in town, live band, vendors, and partied! We finally cut the ribbon with the Chamber of Commerce so I guess we are officially Official now. We love our little town and hope to be around a long, long time. Thanks to all those friends, patrons, and family that have supported us thus far. We are excited about what's to come!

This has been a journey for sure but one that makes you look back and say "Did we really do THAT?".
From the Court to the Kitchen. Most of us dream of finding something that we love to do and then make a career of it. I've done just that! As a former tennis professional and coach and now the Pitmaster and proprietor behind Smokey J's BBQ, I've been lucky enough to do it TWICE. I played college tennis at Virginia Military Institute and moved on to graduate from Clemson. From there I moved to the Lake Norman area and became the assistant tennis pro at The Point Lake and Golf Club (now Trump National Charlotte). As my career advanced, I became the Director of Tennis at Skybrook Country Club and eventually back to Trump as the Director in the same capacity, all the while developing my proficiency in another hobby- BBQ!
My neighbors and friends would ask me to make different things for them on the smoker. I started entering BBQ competitions and found that I did really well in some. As the barbeque titles grew, I started thinking about what made them most sense for me and my family professionally. I have had a tennis racquet in my hand since I was probably 6 years old, I understandably, got a little burnt out. I figured at that point it was as good of a time as any to make a career move. As my wife will tell you..."If God tells you to jump, you jump - I'm not going to say no..."
Most people question why the food truck came first. Well, it was more practical, feesable, and it was a growing trend in the area. Since I had small kids at the time, I wanted more flexibility. The food truck hit the ground running in November of 2014.
We have catered hundreds of events from weddings to festivals, back yard barbeques to church events. Large and small we can handle just about anything you throw at us. We've done high school football games, street parties, teacher work days, car auctions, race team luncheons- you name it.
When the opportunity presented itself to open a brick and mortar location, again my wife said "Jump...lets just hope He's got a parachute for you..." We opened the restaurant in November of 2017 just 3 short years from trading in my tennis racquet for a spatchula! I am enjoying this journey each and every day. It is interesting and new every day. Most of all, I enjoy it because I get to do what I love and share it with you!
